IMPORTANT PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL TO PRAGUE
- 7 days prior to your eye examination in Prague you must not wear contact lenses. Contact lenses alter the shape of the cornea, on the outer surface of the eye. When measurements are taken for the intraocular lens (IOL), it is extremely important for the cornea to be in its natural, unaltered state.
Day 1: Sunday – ARRIVAL TO PRAGUE
- ACCOMMODATION: We will provide you with a list of accommodation next to the clinic or directly in the city center based on your requirements and budget. The cost of the accommodation is starting at £30/night for one person or £45 for two (35€/night for one person or 50€/night for two). The price can vary depending on availability, exchange rates and whether it is high or low season. We will do our best to get you the best price for your accommodation.
- FLIGHTS TO PRAGUE: We are happy to advise you on flights, prices are starting from the UK and Ireland at £20/way (25€/way) and the journey takes about 1hr 30min to Prague

During this consultation we will apply eye drops to dilate your pupils, perform thorough examinations and will make a final decision about the suitability of your Lens Replacement surgery and tailored-made lenses for you.

- Day of leisure to enjoy Prague. We keep this day free in case your lenses need to be flown in from Germany in time for your lens replacement procedure. Please use this evening to have a shower and wash your hair.
Day 4: Wednesday – SURGERY DAY
- This morning you will enjoy breakfast as normal at your hotel and should bring a snack with you to the eye clinic. You will have a 60 to 90-minute pre-op preparation, where you’ll change into your operating gown and have anesthetic eye drops applied to your eyes. We will also give you some anti-anxiety pills if you would like them.
- Both eyes are operated on this day
- Your procedure will last approximately 10-15 minutes per eye. We will make a tiny incision on the edge of your cornea and insert your artificial lens. This does not usually require any stitches and heals naturally. After your procedure we will give you special goggles to wear, and you should also wear sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity. You will be able to see after the surgery, so the treatment is suitable also for a single travelers. You will be given details on your post-op care, as well as a follow-up appointment.
- You may feel some mild discomfort when the anesthetic wears off, but you will be able to enjoy the rest of your day relaxing at your hotel. Return transfers are included.
Day 5: Thursday – CHECK-UP & POSSIBLE DEPARTURE
- Today you will have a post-op check-up with an Eye surgeon. You are free to fly home anytime from Thursday afternoon, but we recommend staying until Friday to keep this day relaxed and easy. Return transfers are included.
Day 6: Friday – ANOTHER CHECK-UP IF NEEDED & DEPARTURE
- Depart Prague at your leisure or extend your stay to enjoy the weekend in our charming city. Complimentary taxi to the airport provided.
How is the Lens Replacement surgery performed?
- The surgery starts with applying aesthetic eye drops will help to numb the eye that will be undergoing surgery. The lens replacement surgery is performed under local anaesthetic and is painless. The surgeon will make a tiny incision to the edge of your cornea to insert the artificial lens.
- The surgery is usually completed without stitches, as the tiny incision heals by itself. After the lens replacement surgery your eye will be covered in a bandage for a couple of hours. You will be advised how to use prescribed eye medication in the operated eye.
- Just after lens replacement surgery, you might experience a mild pain around your eye, itchy eye, blurred vision, or discomfort when looking at bright lights. We advise our clients to bring sunglasses with them and wear them to reduce sensitiveness to the light.
Premium Intraocular Lenses (IOL´s)
The patient can choose based on a recommendation from Lens Replacement surgeon from intraocular lenses:
- Monofocal lenses improve near or far vision, depending on the patient’s choice; the patient still has to wear glasses for the other distance
- Trifocal / Multifocal lenses, thanks to which he or she will have good near and far vision, completely getting rid of glasses
- Toric lenses, which correct astigmatism
On long-term basis the Eye Centre Prague cooperates with Lenstec and Zeiss
- Lenstec is an American producer of intraocular lenses and one of few holders of a certificate of the American FDA (the Food and Drug Administration, the association responsible for protecting public health and product safety and technology).
- Zeiss is a German manufacturer. The Medical Technology segment of ZEISS offers complete solutions to diagnose and treat ophthalmic diseases. In the field of microsurgery the company provides innovative visualization solutions.
The premium Lenstec lenses are made from the most quality and time-tested biocompatible materials. The lenses are meant to last a lifetime, but if problems do arise they can be easily removed and replaced without causing permanent damage to the eye.
Accurate vision
All of the intraocular lenses used at the Eye Centre Prague can be placed into your eye through a very small incision (approx. 2.2mm), which enables fast and safe healing.

Read our FAQs
Lens replacement surgery has plenty of pros, with very few cons. Explore our FAQs below, and if you have any questions, you’re welcome to get in touch with our dedicated team who will be very happy to assist you.
What is the difference between cataract surgery and lens replacement?
Lens replacement surgery corrects cataracts by removing and replacing the affected lens. Lens replacement surgery also corrects a number of other visual problems such as long-sightedness, short-sightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism. If you have lens replacement surgery, it ensures you will not develop any cataracts in the future.
What is the average cost of lens replacement surgery?
The cost of your lens replacement surgery depends on the type of lens suitable for your eyes. Monofocal lenses start from around £1,750 / €1,900 for both eyes, and trifocal lenses are around £3,000 / €3,400 for both eyes. All costs are detailed above, and there are no hidden costs. The price include the thorough pre-operative examination and consultation with our medical team.
Is lens replacement surgery safe?
Eye lens replacement abroad is one of the safest, most effective voluntary surgeries available. Our specialist eye surgeons have performed over 100,000 procedures, and have a combined experience of more than 30 years. We will provide you with full details on how to care for your eyes before and after your treatment, to achieve a successful result. You can learn more by taking a look at our great reviews. If you would like to speak to someone who has had the surgery please get in touch with us and we will be happy to put you in contact with someone suitable.
How long does lens replacement surgery take?
Each eye takes around 10 to 15 minutes to replace your lens. You can have both eyes restored with one surgery on the same day.
How soon after my lens replacement surgery can I see?
The results are immediate, so you will be able to see straight away once your surgery is complete. Since we operate on both eyes together, we will give you special goggles to protect your eyes for the best results. You will need to rest in your hotel for the remainder of the day after your surgery, so you should arrange for a food delivery, but most clients can manage their own needs after the surgery. You can take your goggles off at the end of the day. Most people report a life-changing difference as soon as the goggles are removed. Your vision should be completely stabilised within 1 to 3 months.
When can I fly after lens replacement surgery?
You can fly home in the evening on the next day after your surgery, which is Thursday evening. We do recommend you stay in Prague for an extra night just in case you need a second check-up, and you may like to extend your stay to enjoy some of Prague’s stunning attractions.
When can I return to work after my surgery?
You can go back to work 3 days after your surgery, but you should take it easy for the first two weeks. Your surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation, as it largely depends on the type of work you do.
Does cataract surgery give you 20 20 Vision?
Cataracts cause your vision to become misty and blurred, with increased glare from lights that will eventually lead to blindness. Lens replacement surgery removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a bio-compatible artificial lens to achieve 20/20 vision. Prior to your surgery, you will need to undergo a thorough examination so that our medical team can assess all of your visual concerns and tailor your lenses to suit.
Will I need glasses after lens replacement?
This depends on your lens replacement. Monofocal lenses repair one distance only, so if you have monofocal lenses for long-sightedness then you may still need glasses for short-sightedness, and vice versa. Trifocal lenses correct your vision for all distances, so with trifocal lenses you’ll become completely independent of your glasses.
Can eyesight deteriorate after cataract surgery?
Your vision will stay clear for the rest of your life after cataract surgery, provided you don’t develop any other eye conditions or eye diseases which are unrelated to your cataract surgery. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to a total loss of vision.
Is eye lens replacement permanent?
Artificial eye lenses are designed to last around 100 years, so your lens replacement surgery will correct your vision permanently. Our eye surgeons use first-class lenses produced by the American manufacturer Lenstec, and German manufacturer Zeiss. These are among the highest-quality lenses on the market, and are FDA-approved.
Is eye lens replacement painful?
Lens replacement surgery is not painful. A dedicated nurse will look after you, and will prepare you for your procedure. Your nurse will administer eye drops to dilate your pupil and make the area numb, so you will not feel anything at all during your eye surgery.
We give you information about your post-op care, and can also give you an anti-anxiety pill if you would like one. You may feel a little itching or mild pain after your surgery, but this should not last long. You will be given some eye drops to take with you to your hotel, where you can relax and recover after your eye procedure.
Can you watch TV after cataract surgery?
You can watch TV after your cataract and lens replacement surgery, however your eyes may be a little sensitive to light and blurry through your goggles. It’s best to wait until the day after surgery to watch TV, as this will give your eyes the best possible recovery time without placing any additional stress on them.
How long after lens replacement can I wear mascara?
It is best to wait two weeks for your eyes to heal properly before wearing any makeup or mascara.
How long after lens replacement can I exercise?
You should avoid bending sharply, remaining bent, lifting heavy objects, or taking any strenuous exercise for the first 14 days after your lens replacement surgery, as this will allow time for your eyes to heal. Light exercise can be discussed with your surgeon during your consultation.
How long after cataract surgery can you wash your face?
After surgery you should not touch your face or eyes to avoid infection. You should avoid placing your face under water for 2 weeks after lens replacement and cataract surgery, which includes washing your face, swimming, and visiting the sauna or other watery areas.
Why are multifocal lenses the most expensive?
Trifocal and multifocal lenses are more expensive than monofocal lenses because they correct multiple distances simultaneously, which means you will become glasses independant. 95% of our clients find trifocal or multifocal lenses are the best choice to restore their 20/20 vision.
What activities should be avoided after cataract surgery?
You will be able to do most of your usual activities, but some activities are not recommended for the first 14 days after cataract and lens replacement surgery:
- Touching or rubbing your eyes.
- Applying makeup or wearing mascara.
- Bending sharply, or remaining bent for a long time.
- Lifting heavy objects.
- Working or otherwise being in a dusty environment.
- Strenuous gym workouts.
Swimming, visiting a sauna, or putting your face in water.
Can you drive after a lens replacement?
We provide free airport transfers, as well as free transfers between your hotel and the eye clinic while you are in Prague. Once you are back home it is advisable to wait 1 to 2 weeks before driving.
How long after cataract surgery can I sleep on my side?
It is best to sleep on your back until your eyes are completely healed.
How long do halos last after lens replacement?
Halo effects around lights, particularly in the evenings, can last for a few months.
Which is better monofocal or multifocal?
This depends on your existing vision. If you wish to treat one distance only, then monofocals are suitable for you but you may need to use glasses to correct the other distance. If you wish to become glasses or contact lenses independant, then trifocal lenses will have the best possible outcome.
What is a Posterior Capsulotomy?
Posterior capsulotomy (PCO or YAG laser capsulotomy) is laser surgery that may be required sometime after Lens Replacement or Cataract surgery. It is the most common complication of cataract surgery, also known as a “secondary cataract” or “scar tissue”. Patients might mistakenly believe their surgery was unsuccessful or that the cataract has returned. However, this is not the case, as it is a different condition altogether that can be easily treated.
The treatment involves a non-invasive laser procedure to eliminate the cloudiness that occasionally interferes with a patient’s vision. The procedure takes about 5 minutes, during which a laser is used to create an opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through again for clear vision. Eye care specialists diagnose posterior capsular opacification through a careful eye examination.
At our clinic, we offer complimentary treatment if this issue occurs within one year after the surgery. However, after one year, the cost per eye is £140 / 150€. Clients are responsible for covering the associated costs of traveling to Prague (flights, accommodation, airport and internal transfers, etc.) or having the treatment done in the UK, where it typically costs around £450 per eye or £800 for both eyes.
Please note that to confirm a client’s eligibility for this treatment, a thorough eye examination must be performed, which is priced additionally at £140 / 150€.
